Aarong is most popular
fashion house of Bangladesh. It is a NGO project under BRAC (world’s largest
NGO). There are about 65,000 artisans, 325000 people and 850 small
entrepreneurs are related with this fashion house. Aarong was established in
1978 by Late Ayesha Abed (wife of Sir Fazle Hasan
Abed) and Martha Chen.
In early days they started to
develop women artisan in village area. They trained them by master artisans, brought
their products into local & international market, brought the money to
women artisan’s hand. As a project pf BRAC artisans of this fashion house get
employment, maternal health care, hygiene awareness, subsidized latrines,
micro-credit, legal aid, day care and education for their children. They are creating
opportunities for artisans to protect their age-old art and livelihoods.
Currently they produce handicraft,
clay goods, clothing, jewellery, fabric, non-textile craft, leather goods, footwear,
houseware, food item etc. There are about 16 outlets around Bangladesh.
